Blackout in Crimea as power station fails

Posted on

Crimea has suffered a total power blackout after an incident at a Russian power station, the local government and the Russian ministry of energy says.

Crimea’s Prime Minister Sergei Aksyonov said on social media that the power cut had been caused by a surge in electricity at a power station in Taman in southern Russia which had triggered an automatic shutdown.

He said power would be restored within three hours.

Russia supplies some power to Crimea, which it annexed from Ukraine in 2014, via a cable which runs beneath the Kerch Strait.
