Winx half sister Courvechal trained by Ciaron Maher

Posted on

THIS is Winx’s little sister.

Courchevel will be trained by Ciaron Maher and she’s the daughter of Snitzel out of Winx’s dam Vegas Showgirl and is a full-sister to the Group 3 winner El Divino and Boulder City, who went to stud without racing.

Let’s hope we see this little gem not only get to the races but shows even a touch of her mum’s ability.

Green light for Kenso track

THERE appears to be no concerns for racing on the Kensington track at Royal Randwick on Monday. Chief steward Marc Van Gestel walked the surface on Saturday and was surprised with how well it coped with the rain it copped during the week.

“We are mindful the track is in its infancy but from what we’ve seen today it’s holding up well for Monday’s meeting,” Van Gestel said.

IT’S a shame Hong Kong’s quarantine laws make it near impossible at the moment for their horses to race internationally. Imagine if Racing NSW was able to lure Pakistan Star down for The Championships next year. It would be a huge boost to the carnival and he’d race well in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Welcome home, Tommy

IT’S good to see Tommy Berry coming back from Hong Kong to Sydney to ride full-time again and there’s no doubt he will get plenty of support from Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse and Team Hawkes, who will probably want to get him reacquainted with Chautauqua. Kim Waugh certainly won’t mind giving him a ride either, tweeting this when she found out: “The best news I’ve heard all day”.

ONE punter is confident Trapeze Artist can get the job done in The Everest in October. The TJ Smith Stakes and All Aged Stakes winner from the autumn attracted a $30,000 bet to win the country’s richest race. He’s the equal $5 favourite with Redzel.

JUST on The Everest and after Santa Ana Lane ’s Stradbroke win we’d expect her to be snapped up by a slot-holder. But her stablemate Shoals is also in contention to snare a spot in the rich race for trainer Anthony Freedman.

Early scare for Baker

BJORN Baker had a rough ride to Doomben on Saturday to see his filly Champagne Cuddles contest the Stradbroke Handicap. His Uber collided with a truck on the way to the course but he came through unscathed.

Sweet Dream

GOOD on Kerry Parker for winning his first Group 1 when taking out the Queensland Derby with Dark Dream. Parker had earmarked the race last year for the horse, so it’s a top training performance. But did you see the filly Youngstar fly home for third? She could be the next big thing in Australian racing.

CHANNEL 10 weather man Tim Bailey was living it up at Las Vegas on Saturday, but don’t think he was fully relaxed. “It doesn’t look like it here in Mr Trump’s Vegas pool, but I have butterflies bigger than Donald’s hair,” he said while waiting for his horse Moss Trip to race in the Dane Ripper Stakes at Doomben.

WHAT about the school principal in New York accused of betting on horses during school hours. The teacher denied he was but his tweets suggested that he was following the races during school hours. We wouldn’t mind getting sent to this principal’s office.

JOCKEY Jason Collett was suspended for seven meeting for careless riding on Laussel and is out from June 17 to July 1.

HORSES TO FOLLOW: Araaja (didn’t handle the wet. Forgive him), She Knows (only the weight beat her), God Of Thunder (he’s on the way up)

ONE TO SACK: Oklahoma Girl (too many chances)

RIDE OF THE DAY: Jean Van Overmeire on Doukhan (lost narrowly but it was the perfect ride)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “At the 600m he said ‘I’m going’, so I said ‘OK off you go’,” said Keven Forrester after his win on Jungle Edge.
